In the wake of the terrorism attack on my home country, one of the safest places on earth, New Zealand…Aotearoa, I have struggled to find the words to express my emotions and I apologise for my ramble. It’s easy enough to gloss over things and become a little blasé , as we’re being bombarded by the media, every minute of the day…but the truth of the matter is…we are hurting.
Our small island nation is broken – the innocence of our country has been stripped bare. You might say we were foolish, and naive, to think that something of this magnitude would never happen here, but as our Prime Minister so aptly put it:
“We were not chosen for this act of violence because we condone racism, because we are an enclave for extremism. We were chosen for the very fact that we are none of those things.
“Because we represent diversity, kindness, compassion. A home for those who share our values. Refuge for those who needs it. And those values will not and cannot be shaken by this attack.”
I asked my boys (6.5yrs and 5) how we should treat other people (without bringing the horrific event into the conversation) and their first three words were “Friendliness, Kindness & Love” – we can learn so much from our children! I ask you all to open your arms a little wider, embrace each other, let identity not be a factor – we are all human – and treat everyone with friendliness, kindness and Love!
